Novus’s stakeholders represent the individuals and organizations linked to Novus’s culture and business activities. The way Novus does business has an impact on the global community and in turn, collaboration influences the performance and impact of Novus’s activities.
Novus Engages with Stakeholders
Novus makes a committed effort to understand the needs of our stakeholders by maintaining vibrant, interactive relationships with each group. Novus systematically works to ensure open, transparent, multi-channel dialog based on trust and respect. This is most apparent in the way Novus embraces an open culture in its working environment for employees and values collaborative working relationships with all external stakeholder groups.
The key groups of stakeholders that continuously interact with Novus in many and varied ways include the company’s owners (through the Board of Directors), customers, employees, suppliers, government, NGOs, universities and other business partners and associates within our broad industry.
Novus products play a catalyzing role in customer and industry sustainability. Diversity in the species of animals and geographies of our business underpins the need to engage a range of stakeholders. Maintaining a responsible workplace and supporting employee growth and retention is based on open and free exchange of ideas and perspectives with employees. Gaining trust in the communities of Novus’s global business network is evidenced by engagement with universities and extensive participation in industry organizations, such as the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) Platform, the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) and many more.
Novus’s product solutions require a detailed understanding of the specific agricultural context in which each customer operates, including agricultural requirements, raw material and feed sources, type of animals and cost pressures. Innovative solutions are developed with an understanding of these needs. This requires an ongoing dialog with customers and their full engagement in a collaborative relationship with Novus to ensure they gain optimum value. Many of these conversations with customers include discussion of sustainable agricultural practices and the broad spectrum of food value chain impacts on society and environment.
Together, all stakeholder groups provide the opportunity for heightened impact of Novus’s drive to live our mission to make a clear difference in sustainably meeting the growing global needs for nutrition and health, through innovation.
Partnering with the International Food and Agriculture Management Association
The mission of IFAMA is “bringing together top executives, academics, policy makers, students and stakeholders to network and stimulate strategic thinking across the global food, fiber, fuel, floral and forestry system.” Formed in 1990, IFAMA serves as an effective, worldwide networking organization and acts as a functional bridge between the agribusiness industry, researchers, educators, government, consumer groups and non-governmental organizations. This year’s annual meeting was attended by more than 300 globally and functionally diverse participants.
Novus played a leadership role in the event, including: sponsorship of the student case study competition (Harvard Business-style case studies focused on agribusiness); hosting a luncheon for the approximately 150 industry and student participants of the conference; members of the Novus executive leadership team spoke on a panel discussion related to Human Capital Management; and a case study entitled, “Innovation: From Lab to Market,” featuring Novus’s product CIBENZA® was presented.

Local and Global Community
Novus supports communities — both at the local level in every part of the world in which
we operate and also at a global level — to address the world's major challenges of access
to food, food security and nutrition. We maintain open channels of dialog with community
partners who are committed to advancing these causes through our charitable giving and
employee volunteer programs. In general, we review our programs with our partners on at
least an annual basis.
The environment is most often represented by environmental organizations or members
of the public who provide feedback to Novus about the environmental impacts of our
business and provide suggestions relating to our environmental stewardship. Novus
engages in dialog from time to time with environmental stakeholders on issues relating
to Novus's environmental performance while ensuring that products and manufacturing
processes are developed to minimize adverse environmental impacts.
Priority Sustainability Issues for Novus Stakeholders
The top three priority issues for Novus's stakeholders and for the sustainable, profitable growth of Novus's global business are:
Increasing global food availability:
Novus customers are always under pressure to reduce costs, improve productivity and deliver higher quantities of food to meet increasing demands. Novus makes a major contribution to increasing global food availability through the provision of innovative sustainable agriculture solutions and reapplying solutions which Novus has successfully implemented with comparable customers in different parts of the world. Customers expect that Novus will continue to deliver innovative solutions to help them maintain and grow their business. Novus's business depends on a continued ability to deliver such timely, relevant, creative and affordable solutions.
Supporting food production efficiency and food safety:
Customers look to Novus for advice on how to apply Novus solutions to help them become more efficient in their nutritious food production activities. In some markets, this includes helping customers with basic farming and agriculture practices for optimum cost-efficient productivity. This support for customers is a key element of Novus's competitive edge and is vital to the sustainable growth of Novus business. In addition, a most critical aspect of the food value chain is maintaining absolute safety in a consistent and reliable way. Many human sicknesses can be prevented by improved agricultural practices. The safety of Novus food additives and animal supplements result in safer food products for the general public. Customers expect Novus to deliver safe products and to assist them in ensuring their food production processes are based on safe ingredients. Novus's business depends on both a solid reputation for safety as well as the safety performance record of Novus products. Examples of Novus activity in this respect are described later in this report.
Increasing global food capabilities through science and education:
Novus customers expect more than just the supply of products from Novus. They expect solutions resulting from close collaboration in identifying the unique root causes of quality, safety or productivity challenges that each customer faces. Customers expect Novus to continuously educate them in ways to become more sustainable as well as provide innovative products and solutions. In doing so, Novus must continue to expand its scientific and technical platform and practical knowledge and experience of real-life conditions on farms and in processing facilities and feed mills. Novus invests in research and development and collaboration with academic and other partners to remain at the pinnacle of sustainable agriculture while contributing to ensuring awareness and education so that future generations will be able to enjoy affordable wholesome food and achieve a higher quality of life.
Several additional issues also are important to both Novus stakeholders and to the sustainability of Novus's business. These issues continuously remain on the Novus radar and are referenced in different sections of this report. These issues can be viewed in the Priority Issues Matrix shown below:
The Priority Issues Matrix remains identical to the matrix Novus presented in its 2010 Sustainability Report. This follows an internal management review in 2012, in which insights from stakeholder interactions as well as new business priorities and opportunities were reviewed. No significant differences were found to cause a change to the relative importance of these priority issues, reflecting the consistent commitment of Novus to an overarching vision and mission and the long-term nature of the challenges ahead.
